Warning templates

[edit]

Hi, just poking in because I noticed some of your reverts, like [1], don't have corresponding warnings on talk pages (something something {{uw-warn}}). FifthFive (talk) 23:20, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Another example [2]. I've gone ahead and added it myself.. FifthFive (talk) 18:08, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And again [3]. Can you please give out warning templates more consistently? Thanks, FifthFive (talk) 01:29, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And again :/ [4] FifthFive (talk) 22:36, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) You will find that many old timers do not use these warning templates on IPS for clear vandalism or on those that have been blocked.Moxy🍁 22:49, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks for letting me know. FifthFive (talk) 22:55, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WP:WARNVAND does state that users should be warned for each and every instance of vandalism and I've been told by administrators (Swarm) that leaving the templated warnings are a quote "basic expectation" and that it's never ok to not leave a warning. Is this not true? I recall a case where after a revert by Discospinster, an IP re-added their edits as they hadn't any idea of their mistake, causing more work for another editor to again revert the edits, where then I had to revert the revert as the original edit by the IP turned out to be correct in the first place. All of these unnecessary steps could have been avoided by a simple note after the first revert. -- Cosmic6811 🍁 (T · C) 05:24, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it says users should be warned, not that they must be warned. Also that bit was added after I became an admin. ... discospinster talk 14:57, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If I remember correctly, I've brought the same thing up twice now on this talk page and have never received a response -- Cosmic6811 🍁 (T · C) 05:26, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • @FifthFive:.... At Preferences → Gadgets → there is an option to strike out usernames that have been blocked this will allow you to see who's been blocked so you don't have to waste your time with warnings or to simply see what's going on. As a wonderful vandalism fighter you may find a useful visual indicator.Moxy🍁 01:57, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Reminder to participate in Wikipedia research

[edit]

Hello,

I recently invited you to take a survey about administration on Wikipedia. If you haven’t yet had a chance, there is still time to participate– we’d truly appreciate your feedback. The survey is anonymous and should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement.

Take the survey here.

Hi discospinster,

I have noticed this particular rollback may be better tagged as violating Wikipedia's NPOV policy as it seems more apt in its context? as the reason for it? nevertheless I have advised the new wiki editor about it, as it seems in good faith. Cheers!

A. Quraishi - Sources

[edit]

Had a question on two sources I found updating the notability of this article on Ammad Quraishi. One source seems to be a blog/newsletter entry by the subject from about two years ago referring to his identity and the precise notability claim. Not sure if it can be referenced. The other source is from a national organization that verifies the claim in an archived link (on archive.org) that has redirect issues. The primary link works, but the entry where it is sublinked is either a dead link or just not loading. Should I add these links and then refer to them on the talk page or in the AfD thread? Or do you recommend an alternative? Seeking guidance, BernieBruh (talk) 04:43, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You could add it to the AfD thread, and other editors will check it or try to find a working link. ... discospinster talk 18:31, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There are multiple extended descriptions of his life and work in at least three T.Rex/Bolan books cited in his Wikipedia article that constitute RS in themselves. Therefore I have reinstated his article.

I suspect the same is true of Steve Currie although in fairness none were cited in that article. I am withholding restoring Currie's article for the time being until I have reviewed these sources for similar content.Romomusicfan (talk) 11:49, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Good morning! I created a page for Carl Azuz today. I published the draft this morning Draft:Carl Azuz. I see that this page was previously deleted. Considering Carl Azuz is especially popular among middle and high school students, I assume that previous attempts to create the page lacked the necessary pieces to publish. I would like to contribute more to the page, and I hope that it is clear that Carl is a prominent enough figure to have a Wiki page. Thank you for your help in resolving this. Manmohan (judge)

I appreciate your cooments on my talk page. Please see your DIFF. So you suggesting me (by discussing these issues) to violate undertakings by Wikimedia given to Indian court of this judge as recorded in the first artycle of english wikipadia taken down by court order ? The "deleted" artycle is still accessible from WMF server so I quote for you from it On 14 October, a bench – comprising justices Manmohan and Tushar Rao Gedela – heard the appeal; they said that Wikipedia's portrayal of ANI was potentially defamatory, and hence, must be defended by the editors in question.[24][27] They also characterized Wikipedia's refusal to divulge the identifying details as "extremely disturbing", and warned that WMF would lose its protection under the Safe Harbor Act shall it choose to defend the allegations of defamation.[26][28][27] The judges further objected to the creation of an English Wikipedia article about the defamation case, alleging interference with "a sub-judice matter" and took particular umbrage at the article mentioning criticism of Chawla's order.[26][29] Later that week, the court passed an order directing all "pages on Wikipedia pertaining to the single judge [Chawla] as well as discussion of the observations of division bench [Manmohan and Gedela]" to be "taken down or deleted within 36 hours".[30][31][32] On 18 October, ANI asked the court to seek contempt proceedings against the WMF, since the 36-hour deadline had not been complied with.[33] As an administrator/sysop you can verify this QUOTE text is accuret and exact, and it said "..all.." pages... You are a senior sysop with many edits, so please canduct per the Universal Code and using terms first and Wp local rules second.. To avoid mis-communications, WP editors operate under terms of the WMF first and after that rule of local wikis. Information icon Hello. Regarding the recent revert you made to Daniel Dubois: you may already know about them, but you might find Wikipedia:Template index/User talk namespace useful. After a revert, these can be placed on the user's talk page to let them know you considered their edit inappropriate, and also direct new users towards the sandbox. They can also be used to give a stern warning to a vandal when they've been previously warned. Not sure why you didn't place one, but I've gone ahead and issued a warning template to the user in question (there was already a note from a previous revert). Cheers. @Deepfriedokra: Is there a rule against using templates on 'regulars' or something? I did notice that their account is 20 years old and they must be quite active, judging by the talk page, but I didn't think it would preclude the use of a template. It's concise and gets the message across. I did consider there might have been a reason or such for it, which is why I added the custom personal message at the end instead of just calling it a day.
